South Korea is a country where history and modernity beautifully coexist, and nowhere is this contrast more evident than in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. My journey to this UNESCO World Heritage site began at Kwangwoon University Station, where I boarded Line 1 of the Seoul Metro bound for Suwon. The ride took about an hour and fifteen minutes, but with Korea’s efficient transportation system, the journey was smooth and comfortable. As I stepped out at Suwon Station, excitement surged within me. This was a place I had long yearned to explore. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, built between 1794 and 1796 during the reign of King Jeongjo, stands as a symbol of filial piety and military innovation. The fortress was constructed in honor of King Jeongjo’s father, Prince Sado, and serves as a testament to his dedication to fortifying the kingdom. Unlike other Korean fortresses, Hwaseong boasts a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western military architecture, featuring bastions, watchtowers, gates, and artillery placements. The blend of science and aesthetics in its construction reflects the visionary leadership of King Jeongjo. As I approached Paldalmun Gate, the grand southern entrance, I felt like I was stepping into a different era. Walking along the fortress walls, which stretch over 5.7 kilometers, I was captivated by the breathtaking views of Suwon city. Each gate and pavilion had its own unique character, and I particularly enjoyed Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, a beautiful structure where the king would reside during his visits. The palace also offers traditional Korean performances and costume experiences, making history come alive. One of my favorite spots was the serene Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion, which overlooks a picturesque lotus pond. The tranquility of this garden, surrounded by willows and blooming flowers, made it a perfect place to sit and reflect. As dusk approached, I witnessed something magical—the Artificial Moon Show. This spectacular event features an enormous glowing moon floating over the pavilion, creating an almost ethereal ambiance. The combination of traditional music and soft lighting made it feel like a scene from a historical drama. Suwon Hwaseong truly comes alive at night with Hwaseong Fortress Cultural Night Tours. These performances showcase traditional Korean martial arts, royal parades, and historical reenactments. I was particularly impressed by the Jang Yong Yeong Guard Ceremony, which recreates the elite military unit’s drills with remarkable precision. The fortress, illuminated by warm golden lights, exuded a majestic aura that left me in awe. For those who love collecting memorabilia, the Hwaseong Fortress Stamp Tour is a must-try activity. Various spots around the fortress offer stamp stations where visitors can collect beautifully designed stamps. It’s a fun and interactive way to explore every corner of this historic site while creating a personalized travel keepsake. Purchasing tickets was a hassle-free experience. Entry to the fortress alone costs 1,500 KRW for adults, while the combined ticket for Hwaseong Haenggung Palace and the fortress is 3,500 KRW. The night tours and special performances require separate reservations, and prices vary depending on the event. Tickets can be purchased on-site or through online platforms for convenience.
