When people think of historical places in Korea, they often mention Seoul’s grand palaces or the ancient city of Gyeongju. But for me, one of the most memorable places I’ve visited was Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju. I went there on October 14, 2023, on a cool autumn afternoon. At first, I had no idea what to expect. It wasn’t packed with tourists, and there weren’t many flashy signs telling me what to see. But as I walked along the fortress walls, overlooking the Geumgang River, I felt something different—a quiet connection to the past. This place wasn’t just a historical site; it was a place where history actually felt alive. Built during the Baekje Kingdom (one of Korea’s Three Kingdoms), Gongsanseong served as a royal fortress when Gongju was the capital. The worn stone walls, the towering gates, and the peaceful trails leading up to the watchtowers all told a story of an era long gone. I could imagine the Baekje warriors standing guard, watching the river for any sign of enemies. One of my favorite moments was watching the sunset from Jinryungmun Gate—it was breathtaking. The golden light spread over the fortress walls, and for a moment, it felt like I had traveled back in time. Maybe Gongsanseong isn’t as famous as Gyeongbokgung or Hahoe Village, but that’s exactly why I loved it. It’s a hidden piece of history waiting to be explored, where the past whispers through the wind. And honestly? That made it all the more special. Would I go back? Absolutely. Because sometimes, history isn’t just about the big stories—it’s about the small, quiet moments that make you feel like you’re part of something bigger.
Go in the late afternoon – The golden hour lighting is magical Start from the main gate and walk along the walls – You’ll get the best views this way. Visit the nearby Gongju National Museum – If you want to learn more about Baekje history before or after exploring the fortress.
