A thick padding coat, a scarf, woolen gloves and hot packs because Korean winter nights are not a joke.
On New Year's Eve, I took the night E-train departing from Seoul Station and travelling to Donghae, a small town on the east coast of Korea. Then, a connecting bus took our group to Jangho Harbour where I witnessed the first sunrise of 2025! Our trip continued with typical Korean New Year traditions such as eating rice cake soup or going to the sauna. It was such a refreshing and healthy way to start the new year, so I really recommend it!
Day 1
01.01BUS, TRAIN
After arriving at Donghae Train Station at around 5am, we took a bus to Jangho Harbour. You can choose to admire the sunrise from the hill, or walk down to the small beach and play in the sand. Either way, don't forget to bring hot packs! You don't wanna freeze to death when you should be enjoying yourself :) There are also several restaurants, cafes and convenience stores on the harbour. So after admiring the sunrise, you can warm yourself up with rice cake soup (떡국), traditionally eaten in Korea on the first day of the solar (새해) and lunar new year (설날).

Our next stop was the Donghae hot spring hotel, where the mineral-rich seawater found underground is known for its proven therapeutic effects, such as relieving fatigue and boosting the skin. Keep in mind that you cannot enter the hot spring baths or sauna rooms with your clothes on. So if you're too shy to get naked in front of strangers, you can instead visit the other facilities of the hotel, including cafes and restaurants, or go to Mangsang Beach 500 meters away.

Then, we went to Mukho Port Fish Market, the largest fish market on the East coast. I honestly felt like I was visiting an aquarium because the market displayed an uncountable number of fish tanks containing live squids, scary crabs and giant octopus. However, if you're like me and cannot eat sea food at all, do not worry: you can find various cafes around the market selling sweet pastries, you just need to pass through the dozens of sea food restaurants first.

If you climb up the hill on the east side of the market, you can find a picturesque mural village, a lighthouse/observatory and a beautiful panoramic view on Mukho Harbour !
