I had the pleasure of escaping to Damyang, a picturesque county in Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Known for its lush bamboo forests and serene atmosphere, Damyang offers a perfect getaway for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty. From the iconic Juknokwon Bamboo Garden to the quaint streets of Meta Provence, my time there was nothing short of enchanting.

A Walk Through Nature’s Majesty

I began my journey at the Damyang Metasequoia-lined Road (메타세쿼이아가로수길), a scenic path famous for its towering metasequoia trees. Walking along this picturesque road felt like stepping into a storybook. The symmetry of the trees, their majestic height, and the way sunlight filtered through their branches created a calming and almost magical ambiance. In winter, when snow gently rests on the branches, the beauty of this spot reaches an ethereal level, making it a must-visit destination year-round.

The Charm of Meta Provence

My next stop was Meta Provence, a delightful village brimming with colorful European-style buildings, cozy cafes, and boutique shops. This charming area felt like a slice of Europe tucked into the Korean countryside. It’s a perfect destination for couples, offering romantic corners and the opportunity to leave a love lock as a symbol of your bond. Even as a solo traveler, I found joy in wandering through the vibrant streets, sipping a warm coffee, and taking in the lively yet relaxing atmosphere.

Exploring the Juknokwon Bamboo Garden

The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the Juknokwon Bamboo Garden, an enchanting forest that offers a sense of peace and connection with nature. Unlike some crowded tourist destinations, Juknokwon retains its authenticity and calm. The garden’s winding paths lead you through towering bamboo trees, and every corner feels like it was designed to inspire mindfulness and relaxation.

What makes Juknokwon truly special are the hidden spots within the garden. I discovered small rest areas perfect for pausing to soak in the beauty, as well as spaces for playful moments, making it ideal for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re looking to meditate, take stunning photos, or simply breathe in the fresh air, this garden has it all.

Savoring Local Flavors at Changpyeong Market

No trip to Damyang would be complete without indulging in its local cuisine. At Changpyeong Market (창평시장), I was treated to a feast of flavors, sampling everything from savory pancakes to bamboo-infused rice dishes. The market’s vibrant energy and the friendliness of the vendors made the experience even more enjoyable. I also picked up a few unique souvenirs to remember my trip—small, handcrafted items that felt like a piece of Damyang’s charm to take home.

The Unique Wonders of Delight Damyang

Before leaving, I made a quick stop at Delight Damyang, an immersive media art experience that blends technology and nature in captivating ways. This modern addition to Damyang’s attractions offers a fresh perspective on its beauty, proving that the county seamlessly combines tradition with innovation.

As my weekend came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the time I spent in Damyang. The county’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality make it a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

Whether you’re strolling through bamboo forests, exploring charming villages, or savoring local delicacies, Damyang offers something for everyone. For me, it was more than just a weekend getaway—it was a chance to reconnect with nature and rediscover a sense of peace.
