Ring the Golden Bell and Become a Joseon Dynasty Scholar

Enjoying the morning tour of Royal Tombs

Have you ever watched the K-drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”? If yes, you might be familiar with the life of scholars during the Joseon dynasty and its exam culture. Well, even if you are not familiar with it, don’t be upset because many cultural programs in Korea give you the chance to turn your favourite historical drama into real life, as it has for me this October.

“Ring the Golden Bell Quiz 2024” is an event held by the Royal Palaces and Tomb Center. It's a great mix of typical modern Korean quiz shows and the exam setting and style of the Joseon dynasty.

Enjoying traditional music

The program consisted of two parts: a morning tour of the royal tombs and an afternoon quiz. You might not have thought that royal tomb tours could be interesting, but I assure you they are! A peaceful and enjoyable walking tour of Seolleung Royal Tombs in the Gangnam area, accompanied by traditional Korean musicians in hanbok who played the “gayageum” and “haegeum,” was a wonderful experience.

After a traditional Korean lunch, the main event took place where everyone transformed into students from the Joseon dynasty by wearing scholars' hanbok and participating in the quiz. We must praise the organizers for being very kind and conducting the quiz in both Korean and English, allowing a large number of students to participate and enjoy it. Although only one student was able to win and ring the bell, all the other students fulfilled their dream of immersing themselves in the atmosphere of a historical drama while having fun at the same time. Would you also like to ring the bell next time?

A Day at the Joseon Tombs: History, Fun, and THE Golden Bell Quiz

Author: Laura Hernandez Cuervo

Stepping into the past has never been so much fun! Recently, I had the unique opportunity to explore the historic Joseon Tombs located near Seolleung Station. But this wasn't just any ordinary tour—it was a chance to immerse myself in the rich history of Korea while engaging in some friendly competition.

The tombs themselves were awe-inspiring, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Joseon Dynasty’s royal family. As we walked through the site, I learned not just about their cultural significance but also about the incredible care that goes into preserving these treasures for future generations. The tombs are still actively maintained, making it clear how deeply people value their heritage.

But the real fun started when we were invited to take part in a Golden Bell quiz competitiondressed as students, no less! Answering questions about Korea’s history, culture, and even the tombs themselves, we quickly realized that learning can be both educational *and* entertaining

The quiz brought out our inner students, and the friendly rivalry made the entire experience unforgettable.

It’s not every day you get to mix history with a bit of lighthearted fun, and this tour proved that learning about the past doesn’t have to be all serious business. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun day out, the Joseon Tombs at Seolleung Station offer something for everyone.

A perfect blend of education and excitementthis is one experience I won’t forget anytime soon!
