The Boryeong Mud Festival: A Unique Summer Festival with 27 Years of History

2024.08.16

A festival that is constantly included in the strangest and most unique world event articles and promoted as one of Korea’s

most interesting summer activities has just celebrated its 27th anniversary, and we are here to tell you all about it.

Get ready to learn about the Boryeong Mud Festival!

Having started as a way to promote the healing qualities of local mud in the 90s, the Boryeong Mud Festival grew

to become a great attraction for people from all over the world over the next decades of its existence.

One really does feel it’s a globally famous event – if international friendship had a face, it would be just it!

Everyone is playing around, splashing mud on each other, and running away from water guns.

Fun is a language that does not need translation, after all.

It does not, however, mean that you will necessarily get dirty and wet if you decide to visit –

the festival is divided into several zones, each dedicated to its own activity,

so you can make a choice according to how many changes of clothes you have brought.

The zones you may find in the festival territory are:

  • The Mud Experience zone
  • The Family Zone

These two are the signature zones of the festival.

Once you enter, you’re greeted by people running around

drenched in mud and you can see them cover their bodies with it from top to bottom,

laughing happily and chasing after each other.

Fear not! You can still stay clean if you walk around carefully.

  • The Steel Mud Challenge Zone

An activity-driven competition inspired by the Korean reality show “Steel Troops”,

the Steel Mud Challenge is a perfect place to test your endurance and fitness abilities!

To participate, you need to register in a team of five, so it could be more fun if you could bring your friends along!

  • The Pet Zone (dogs only)

The healing properties of mud aren’t just human-exclusive – mud is great for pets, too! Provide incredible play time for your beloved dog by taking it to the free-entrance pet zone where it can run around and enjoy mud with other furry friends.

  • The Water Park Zone

A mud-free zone where you can play in swimming pools – particularly great for those with children!

  • The Special Stage

An area where you can enjoy every music performance at the festival! This year, the visitors got to see K-pop, hip-hop, rock, and trot concerts and an e-sports festival.

  • The Tent Zone & Event Booths
  • The Food Truck Zone

You ought to get hungry after all those activities – and that is when the Food truck zone and the Event booths zone will come in handy! Feel the festival spirit with street food and shop for various souvenirs, mud cosmetics, and more.

You may also try your luck at promotional events and win a big meat restaurant coupon... or a can of coffee!

  • The Mud Care Zone

A zone where you can receive mud facial and spa treatments for an additional payment.

  • The Rest Area
  • The Locker Rooms

Zones made for your comfort and convenience.

This year, Funday Korea went to the Mud Festival and took you guys with!

In addition to the zones we have already described, this year’s visitors also got

to enjoy an air show of the famous aerobatic team Black Eagles

and get beautiful mud paintings on their bodies (very popular with children!).

To see first-hand reports, you can see reels of the participants in the

Mud Festival account – take a look and feel the energy of incredible summer fun.

We do hope you get inspired to visit Boryeong next summer, and if you do – let us know how it went!

Until next time,
