Oryu Beodeul Market: A Hidden Gem in the Middle of Seoul

2024.08.16

Korea is a country famous for its contemporary culture. K-pop, k-beauty, k-dramas, you name it!

It’s a country full of beautiful cafes and restaurants, of cute pop-up stores and photo booths,

online and offline shops of modern fashion.

But those of you who have lived in Korea for a while, as well as those who are only planning to visit,

may wonder: what else does Korea have to offer?

Our answer to you is: hidden gems!

Today, we begin our hidden gem-hunting journey by introducing you to a place which,

once you find out about, you will want to take your friends to.

Each nook and cranny of this little town is filled with rich history – not only big-

but also small-scale history of common people who have lived here all their lives.

It’s the Oryu Beodeul Market!

Where: Oryu-dong St., Line no. 1, exits 1, 2.

What: A street full of little restaurants and take-out stores.

Nearby: Pureun Arboretum, Hangdong Railroad, Forest Together Trail, Goodwin House.

Living in a big city like Seoul can get overwhelming.

Wherever you go, you see somebody running in a hurry or working even as they take the subway.

People get caught up in the metropolitan noise, and their kindness gets caught up with them.

When you feel like you need a break from the coldness of the big city,

take the train to Oryu-dong Station, Line number 1.

Once you get off the train, you may catch yourself thinking,

“This does not feel like Seoul at all”.

Oryu-dong is a small town-looking station where people greet you

with friendly smiles and worryabout your being hot

as you stand in the sun waiting for the traffic lights to change.

When visiting the Oryu Beodeul Market, Funday Korea came by

a few interesting cafes and restaurants,

and each of them carried their own story.

Take a look at this map and try out a few places!

The beauty of the area does not just end on the Oryu Beodeul Market.

We invite you to take a stroll along the Beodeul Nadeuri route which consists of

several attractions that people of all ages can enjoy.

Find peace and spend soul-healing time in Seoul’s very first Pureun Arboretum,

home to more than a thousand plant species.

Truly a place out of a fairytale book!

Then, keep on walking until you see the Handong Railway.

A real railroad in the past, now it is a course surrounded by trees, perfect for a walk with your loved ones.

Funday’s picture pose recommendation: holding hands while walking on the track!

This summer-autumn season, you have a chance to not only enjoy a visit to place, but also get paid for it!

Check out our Oryu Beodeul Market Reels Challenge and get a chance to win up to 500,000 KRW.

We hope to see you make great memories in the Oryu Beodeul Market!

Yours,

Funday Korea team
