About your trip

My trip to Suwon felt like stepping through a portal where Korea’s past and present coexist in perfect harmony. The journey began at the magnificent Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking along its ancient, sturdy walls, I could almost hear the echoes of the 18th century. The historical ambiance was incredibly immersive. We were even treated to a free traditional performance—a vibrant display of folk music and dance in period costumes right in the courtyard. It was a spontaneous and beautiful glimpse into the Joseon era, making the history feel alive and tangible. From there, we dove into modern Korean pop culture by visiting a filming location from the hugely popular drama "Love Runner." As a fan, standing where my favorite scenes were shot was thrilling. The spot, a charmingly quaint street, was buzzing with fellow fans taking pictures, all sharing in that unique excitement that only a beloved show can inspire. Our final stop was the stunning Starfield Library, nestled inside a sprawling mall. This was a different kind of magic. Towering bookshelves reaching two stories high created a cathedral of literature. It wasn't just a library; it was a social space and a cultural hub. Seeing people reading, sipping coffee, or simply admiring the grandeur, I felt the modern romanticism Koreans have for design and public spaces. In just one day, Suwon offered me the soul of traditional Korea and the vibrant pulse of its contemporary life—a truly unforgettable blend.

TIP

1. For the Hwaseong Fortress, I highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. The fortress wall path is scenic but involves some uneven surfaces and gentle slopes. The view from the top, especially near Seojangdae (the western command post), is absolutely worth the climb and offers a panoramic view of the old city. 2. To make the most of your day, plan your visit to the fortress around the free performance schedule, which you can check online beforehand. Afterwards, the "Love Runner" filming spot and the Starfield Library are perfect indoor escapes for the hotter or rainier parts of the afternoon, as they are both located in modern, climate-controlled complexes.
